Regular Dental Cleanings and Checkups
In addition to the care you give your mouth and teeth at home - brushing, flossing and rinsing - it is extremely important to have regular professional cleanings. This is the only way to remove calculus (tartar), which traps plaque bacteria along the gum line. Seeing your dentist and hygienist every six months will also prevent small nuasance problems from turning into BIG PAINFUL problems. An example would be taking care of needed fillings while they are small - neglect could lead to pain and infection, need of a root canal or at worst, tooth loss.

During your cleaning and exam, not only will you receive the highest level of professional, friendly and thorough treatment, you will also receive a comprehensive exam. This exam accomplishes a number of things including assessment of your dental health, but also your general physical health too. It has been documented by the American Dental Association and the Academy of General Dentistry that a healthy mouth reflects a heathy body. Recent reports indicate a relationship between periodontal (gum) disease and stroke, heart disease and preterm low-birth-weight babies. Likewise, more than 90 percent of all systemic diseases have oral manifestations, meaning your dentist may be the first health care provider to diagnose a health problem. (1)

Periodically X-rays will aslo be taken during your visit. Xrays provide the dentist with an important tool that shows the condition of your teeth, its roots, jaw placement and the overall composition of your facial bones. They can also assist in determining the presence or degree of periodontal (gum) disease, abscesses and many abnormal growths, such as cysts and tumors. X-rays also can show the exact location of impacted and unerupted teeth. They can pinpoint the location of cavities and other signs of disease that may not be possible to detect through a visual examination.
